Karen is a facilitator, artist and designer who delivers creative services using a participant driven approach. In Karen’s practice, the process used to facilitate a workshop or coordinate a project is equally as important as the outcome.

Karen Batten and parents were born on Eora Country (Sydney) and are of English, Irish and German heritage. Karen lived on Jiegara Country (Iluka, NSW) as a child and currently lives and works in Turrabal and Jagera Country (Brisbane). Karen currently lives and works in Highgate Hill.

Karen worked for seven years as a full-time corporate graphic designer. In 2002 Karen started working as a freelance project coordinator, artsworker and graphic designer. Karen uses a mix of creative mediums including zine-making, painting, mural creation, craft, graphic and web design, photography, animation, film, circus and basic maintenance skills. Karen has experience working with individuals, organisations and businesses of diverse cultural backgrounds, genders, age, socio-economic status and ability levels.

Karen is committed to personal and professional skill development through courses, listening and seeking information. Karen has completed an Associate Diploma in Commercial Art, a Diploma in Graphic Design and Bachelor in Fine Arts.

Karen’s work and art practice blends a passion for social justice and self-expression with a mix of digital and visual arts. Karen’s practice thrives on collaborations with friends and community.
